How does Photodynamic Therapy work as an anti-ageing treatment?
PDT is the use of a photosensitising agent, 5ALA (Aminolevulonic Acid) and then activated by light to regenerate the cells and reduce sun damage.
ALA is a natural product found throughout the body and essential for haemoglobin synthesis. PDT kills unhealthy damaged cells only, assisting in the formation of fresh healthy new skin. The results are clearer, smoother and healthier glowing skin.
What can be treated with PDT?
- fine lines and large pores
- blotchy or poor quality skin
- hypertropic lesions
- sun spots and freckles
- ACNE – see acne page
- cystic acne
- Bowens disease (medical)
- sebaceous gland hyperplasia
- seborrhieic keratoses
- PDT for acne treatment
Acne is a common problem, especially for teenagers. Research has proven that 30% of patients are cured of acne following one treatment and up to 60% following two** as an alternate treatment to Roaccutane™ without the side effects associated with Roaccutane™ use.
PDT works by;
- the destruction of sebaceous glands
- destruction of P.Acnes, the bacteria that causes acne,
- improves the texture and tone of skin
This treatment is suitable for those that have not responded well to antibiotics and prefer not to proceed with Roaccutane™. Most can expect an improvement in two weeks. (** With use of daily home care.)
How is the treatment performed?
After a thorough consultation, the skin is cleaned. The solution, 5-ALA is applied to the affected area. When applied to the skin 5-ALA is absorbed into abnormal and damaged cells. Once absorbed, an LED or IPL light source is focused on the treated area for a period of time. When exposed to this light, the abnormal skin cells are destroyed revealing new smoother, fresh healthy skin.
What happens post treatment?
Post treatment your skin will need to go through normal healing. You will be photosensitive (sensitive to light) for 24 – 48 hours. It is best to keep indoors as much as possible during this period. Expect that your skin will feel sunburnt and appear red and for some, mild swelling for 1 – 2 days. Your skin may also flake, crust or peel for 3-7 days. This is a normal result and means the treatment has worked by destroying the damaged cells. After 7- 10 days the redness would have all but disappeared and be well on it’s way to healing. Skin may still be dry and tight. 10 -14 days later healthy, smooth, clear skin will be revealed.
All skins respond differently depending on the skins condition, and may require repeat treatment.
