Learn how exosome therapy supports skin rejuvenation, collagen production and recovery after skin treatments. Discover the benefits, FAQs and expert insights from Skin Clinic Blyss in Sydney.

Exosome therapy is one of the latest advances in regenerative skin treatments, helping support the skin’s natural repair and renewal processes. Often combined with treatments such as skin needling and CO₂ laser, exosomes may assist with skin rejuvenation, collagen production and post-treatment recovery. In this guide, you’ll learn what exosomes are, how they work, who they may be suitable for, and what to consider when choosing exosome therapy in Sydney.

There are moments in the aesthetic industry when something genuinely new arrives—not simply another trend, but a genuine advancement in our understanding of how skin repairs and regenerates itself.

Exosome therapy is one of those advancements.

At Skin Clinic Blyss, our clinician team of Bachelor-qualified Dermal Clinicians and Registered Nurses is committed to offering treatments supported by current research and clinical evidence. As regenerative skin therapies continue to evolve, exosomes have emerged as one of the most exciting developments in modern aesthetic medicine.

This guide explains what exosomes are, how they work, what skin concerns they may help address, and why they are becoming an increasingly important part of advanced skin rejuvenation treatments.

Quick Answer: What Are Exosomes?

Exosomes are microscopic extracellular vesicles that act as messengers between cells. They carry proteins, lipids, growth factors and signalling molecules that help coordinate the body’s natural healing and regeneration processes.

In skin treatments, exosomes are commonly applied after procedures such as skin needling and laser resurfacing to support skin recovery and encourage healthy skin regeneration.

What Are Exosomes?

Exosomes are naturally produced by almost every cell in the body.

Their role is to carry biological information between cells, allowing them to communicate efficiently during healing, tissue repair and regeneration.

Unlike stem cells, exosomes do not become new cells themselves. Instead, they deliver instructions that help existing cells respond more effectively to injury or inflammation.

Within aesthetic medicine, carefully selected exosome products are increasingly being incorporated into treatment protocols to support the skin’s natural regenerative processes.

Why Is Exosome Therapy Receiving So Much Attention?

Regenerative skin treatments have developed rapidly over the past decade.

While treatments such as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) remain valuable options, exosomes have generated significant interest because they contain a rich concentration of signalling molecules involved in cellular communication.

Current research continues to investigate their role in improving skin quality, supporting collagen production and assisting the skin’s recovery following advanced clinical procedures.

As the evidence grows, exosomes are becoming an increasingly valuable addition to evidence-based skin rejuvenation programs.

What Skin Concerns Can Exosome Therapy Help Address?

Exosome therapy is currently being explored for its potential to support treatment outcomes for a variety of skin concerns, including:

Fine lines and early signs of ageing

Dull or uneven skin tone

Reduced skin elasticity

Impaired skin barrier function

Skin recovery following clinical treatments

General skin rejuvenation

Suitability always depends on your individual skin condition and treatment goals.

Exosomes After Skin Needling

Skin needling creates controlled micro-channels within the skin, stimulating the body’s natural wound-healing response.

These temporary channels also provide an opportunity to apply carefully selected topical ingredients immediately following treatment.

Exosomes are increasingly incorporated into post-treatment protocols because they may support the skin’s natural recovery processes and complement the regenerative response initiated by skin needling.

For many patients, combining exosomes with skin needling forms part of a broader treatment plan focused on improving overall skin quality and long-term skin health.

Exosomes After CO₂ Laser Treatments

CO₂ laser treatments remain one of the most effective options for improving skin texture, acne scarring and signs of ageing.

Because laser treatments deliberately stimulate controlled skin renewal, the recovery phase is an important part of achieving optimal results.

Exosomes are increasingly being incorporated into post-laser protocols to support the skin’s natural healing response and complement the regenerative processes activated by treatment.

As with all advanced skin procedures, suitability should be assessed during a professional consultation.

Exosomes vs PRP: What’s the Difference?

Patients often ask whether exosomes are “better” than PRP.

Rather than replacing one another, they are different regenerative technologies with different characteristics.

Exosomes

PRP

Applied topically after treatment

Requires a blood draw

Rich in signalling molecules

Derived from the patient’s own blood

No blood collection required

Blood collection required

Emerging area of regenerative medicine

Long-established treatment option

The most appropriate option depends on your individual skin concerns, treatment goals and clinical assessment.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Exosome Therapy?

Exosome therapy may be suitable for patients interested in improving overall skin quality or supporting recovery following advanced skin treatments.

It may be considered for those who wish to:

Improve skin texture

Support collagen production

Maintain healthy skin

Complement skin needling or laser treatments

Address early signs of skin ageing

Every treatment plan should be personalised following a comprehensive skin consultation.

Are Exosomes Safe?

Safety depends on the quality of the exosome product being used, the clinical protocols followed and the suitability of the patient.

For this reason, exosome therapy should only be performed by appropriately trained healthcare professionals or dermal clinicians using evidence-based treatment protocols.

As with any advanced skin treatment, a professional consultation is essential to determine whether exosomes are appropriate for your skin.

Exosome Therapy in Sydney

As exosome therapy becomes more widely recognised, many Sydney patients are seeking experienced clinicians who understand how to incorporate regenerative treatments into comprehensive skin management programs.

Choosing a clinic should involve more than comparing treatment prices.

Factors to consider include:

Clinical qualifications

Experience with advanced skin treatments

Individualised treatment planning

Evidence-based protocols

Ongoing support and review

Exosomes are most effective when they form part of a broader strategy for achieving healthier skin rather than being viewed as a standalone treatment.

Is HIFU the Ultimate Facelift Alternative? Our Dermal Clinicians explore the evidence focusing on the Ultraformer MPT, the most recent advancement in HIFU technology.

Key Takeaways

What is HIFU and how does it work?

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a non-invasive skin-tightening treatment. It uses focused ultrasound energy to heat deep layers of skin, which stimulates collagen production. Collagen improves skin elasticity, structure, and firmness.

What makes the Ultraformer MPT different / better than earlier HIFU devices?

The Ultraformer MPT includes Micro-Pulse Technology (MPT) which improves precision, comfort, and treatment speed. It can target multiple depths (from superficial layers down to the SMAS) using different handpieces, allowing more customised treatments with better coverage and less downtime.

How does HIFU (with Ultraformer MPT) compare to a traditional surgical facelift?

The differences include:

Invasiveness & downtime: HIFU is non-invasive, no incisions or stitches, minimal recovery. A surgical facelift is far more invasive with longer recovery.

Results timeline: HIFU results develop gradually over weeks-to-months as collagen builds. A surgical facelift provides more immediate, dramatic changes.

Longevity of effects: Surgical facelifts typically last much longer (up to ~10 years or more) vs HIFU which offers long-lasting but less permanent effects (often ~1 year or more) depending on individual factors.

Cost & risk: HIFU is less expensive, lower risk, fewer side effects (usually mild swelling/redness) than surgery.

What kinds of skin issues / patient profiles are best suited for Ultraformer MPT HIFU?

It works well for people with mild to moderate skin laxity, those not ready for surgery, or those wanting to maintain results post-facelift. Good for improving fine lines, wrinkles, overall skin texture. If someone wants major lifting or dramatic changes, surgery may still be needed.

What are the limitations of HIFU / Ultraformer MPT?

Some key limitations:

Results are more subtle, not as dramatic as surgical outcomes.
Effect builds gradually, so expectation setting is important.
Longevity is less than surgery, and multiple treatments or maintenance may be needed.

What is HIFU?

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound, commonly known as HIFU, has rapidly gained popularity as a non-invasive alternative to traditional facelifts. Touted as a revolutionary treatment for skin tightening and rejuvenation, it offers the promise of a youthful appearance without the need for surgery.

HIFU is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to target deep layers of the skin. This energy causes the tissue to heat up rapidly, which triggers a natural healing response. The result is the production of new collagen—a key protein that gives skin its structure and elasticity.

How Does the Ultraformer MPT Work?

The Ultraformer MPT is an advanced HIFU device designed to deliver precise and controlled ultrasound energy to the skin. Unlike earlier HIFU devices (see our comparison with the Ultraformer III), the Ultraformer MPT features Micro-Pulse Technology (MPT), which allows for faster treatment times, more comfort, and enhanced results.

Precision Targeting: The Ultraformer MPT can target multiple layers of the skin, from the superficial to the deeper SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) layer, which is typically addressed during surgical facelifts. This multi-layer targeting ensures a more comprehensive tightening effect.

Collagen Stimulation: By stimulating collagen production, the Ultraformer MPT helps to lift and tighten the skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and improve overall skin texture. The results are natural-looking and improve gradually over time.

Customisable Treatments: The Ultraformer MPT offers different handpieces that allow for customisable treatments, targeting specific areas like the face, neck, and décolletage. This versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of skin types and concerns.

Comparing HIFU with a Traditional Facelift

While HIFU, particularly with the Ultraformer MPT, offers impressive results, it’s important to understand how it compares to a traditional facelift:

Non-Invasiveness: The most significant advantage of HIFU is that it’s non-invasive. There are no incisions, stitches, or lengthy recovery times involved. Patients can return to their daily activities immediately after treatment.

Gradual Results: HIFU results develop gradually over a few months as new collagen forms. This can be ideal for those seeking subtle, natural improvements. However, the results are not as dramatic as those achieved with a surgical facelift.

Longevity of Results: While HIFU provides long-lasting results, typically lasting up to a year or more, they do not compare to the permanence of a surgical facelift, which can last up to 10 years or more.

Cost and Risk: HIFU is significantly less expensive than a facelift and carries fewer risks. There’s no need for anaesthesia, and side effects are generally mild and temporary, such as slight redness or swelling.

Evidence-Based Effectiveness of HIFU

Numerous studies have shown the effectiveness of HIFU in skin tightening and lifting. Clinical evidence supports its ability to stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity. For example, a study published in The Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy found that patients treated with HIFU experienced significant lifting and tightening of the skin, with minimal side effects.

The Verdict – Is HIFU the Ultimate Facelift Alternative?

While HIFU with the Ultraformer MPT is an excellent option for those seeking non-invasive skin tightening and rejuvenation, nothing can compete with a scalpel and it’s not a replacement for a surgical facelift.

The results are more subtle and gradual, making it ideal for individuals who prefer a less invasive approach with minimal downtime.

Understanding your skin type is one of the most important steps in achieving healthy, glowing skin. We refer to skin types based on oil flow in your skin – don’t confuse this with skin conditions. Whether your skin is normal, oily, dry or combination, knowing what type you have allows you to choose the right skincare products, avoid barrier damage and get the most from your treatments.

In this guide, our dermal clinicians explain the different skin types, how to tell which one you have, and when to seek professional advice for the best results.

Why Knowing Your Skin Type Matters

Your skin type affects everything — from the cleanser you should use to the treatments that deliver the best results. Using the wrong products can lead to breakouts, dryness or irritation, and over time, can damage your skin barrier.

When you understand your skin type, you can:

Choose the right skincare ingredients

Prevent unnecessary irritation

Keep your skin balanced and hydrated

Get better, longer-lasting treatment outcomes

How to Tell What Skin Type You Have (at Home Test)

The easiest way to find out your skin type is by doing a simple at-home test. Note, skin often can have a few different skin types.

STEP 1: Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser, then pat dry.

STEP 2: Wait around 30 minutes without applying any products.

STEP 3: Check your skin in the mirror:

Tight, rough or flaky? → Dry Skin

Shiny all over? → Oily Skin

Shiny T-zone only (forehead, nose, chin)? → Combination Skin

Feels balanced and smooth? → Normal Skin

Normal Skin — Balanced and Healthy

Having ‘normal’ skin means your skin is well-balanced — not too oily and not too dry. You may notice a little shine on your forehead, nose and chin on warmer days, but overall, your skin feels comfortable and smooth.

Signs of normal skin include:

Even tone and smooth texture

Small, refined pores

Minimal blemishes or irritation

Good blood circulation and natural glow

Even with balanced skin, it’s still important to maintain a good skincare routine to protect your barrier and prevent future concerns.

What Type of Facial Treatment is Best for Normal Skin

If you have normal skin, you’re in the lucky position of being able to enjoy most facial types. The goal is maintenance — keeping your skin balanced, hydrated and radiant.

Recommended Normal skin facials:

Customised Enzyme or Hydration Treatments – Gently exfoliates and refreshes without over-stimulating the skin.

LED Light Therapy Facial – Boosts collagen and maintains a healthy, glowing complexion.

Seasonal Skin Refresh Facial Treatment– Ideal every 4–6 weeks to maintain optimal skin function.

Tip: Focus on consistency rather than intensity. A monthly facial will help preserve your skin’s natural equilibrium and glow.

Oily Skin — Managing Shine and Breakouts

Oily skin produces more sebum (oil) than other skin types. It’s often influenced by genetics, hormones, stress, diet or certain products and medications.

Common signs of oily skin:

Enlarged pores

Shiny appearance, especially mid-day

Frequent blackheads, whiteheads or acne

Thicker skin texture

A common myth is that oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser. In fact, skipping hydration can make oil production worse. Our clinicians recommend using a cream (yes, cream) cleanser twice daily and applying an oil-free, lightweight moisturiser to balance the skin.

What Type of Facial is Best for Oily Skin

Oily skin benefits from facials that balance oil production, deeply cleanse pores and prevent congestion without stripping the skin barrier.

Recommended Oily Skin facials:

Purifying, Deep Cleansing or Chemical Peel – Removes impurities and helps manage blackheads and excess sebum.

LED Blue Light – Kills acne-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation.

LED Red or Infrared – to treat inflammation and healing.

Hydrafacial Treatment – Exfoliates dead cells and clears clogged pores for a smoother finish.

Tip: Avoid overly harsh exfoliants or drying products; gentle yet thorough cleansing is key.

Dry Skin — Restoring Moisture and Comfort

Dry skin produces less natural oil, leading to rough texture and tightness — especially in winter or as we age. Hormonal changes, such as menopause, can also make the skin drier over time.

You may have dry skin if you notice:

Flakiness or dullness

Tightness after cleansing

Rough texture or itchiness

Fine lines that appear more visible

To restore comfort, use a gentle, hydrating cleanser, avoid hot showers, and apply a barrier-repairing moisturiser with ceramides or hyaluronic acid. Professional treatments like hydrating facials or LED therapy can also boost moisture retention.

What Type of Facial Treatment is Best for Dry Skin

Dry skin needs nourishment and hydration to strengthen the barrier and restore a supple texture. The best facials focus on replenishment, not exfoliation.

Recommended Dry Skin facials:

Dermal Delivery Infusion Facial Treatments – Replenishes moisture using barrier repair ingredients and antioxidant serums.

LED Light Therapy Facial – Encourages skin repair and boosts hydration. Red or Infrared ONLY

Nourishing Barrier Repair Facial and Dermal Delivery – Strengthens dry, compromised skin with lipid-rich products.

Tip: Regular professional hydration facials can dramatically improve comfort and smoothness, especially during winter or post-holiday skin recovery.

Combination Skin — Balancing Different Areas

Combination skin features both oily and dry areas — usually an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) with normal or dry cheeks. This type can be challenging because you’re managing multiple concerns at once.

Signs of combination skin:

Oily T-zone with dry or normal cheeks

Occasional breakouts in oily areas

Sensitivity or dehydration on cheeks

Feels dehydrated but oily at the same time

Our dermal clinicians can help design a tailored skincare routine to balance oil production while keeping dry areas nourished. In most cases, a combination of lightweight serums with targeted ingredients and gentle exfoliation works best.

What Type of Facial is Best for Combination Skin

Combination skin requires balance — clearing congestion in oily areas while soothing and hydrating the drier zones. Customised facials work best for this type.

Recommended Combination skin facials:

Bespoke Combination Facial Treatments– Targets different areas with tailored products and techniques.

Chemical Exfoliation + LED Therapy – Gently refines texture while calming sensitive zones.

Hydrafacial– Four steps to deep clean, resurface and rehydrates simultaneously for smoother, balanced skin and brighter skin.

Tip: Speak with your clinician about alternating between purifying and hydrating facials to keep all areas of your skin in harmony.

In the quest for perfect skin, many of us rely on makeup to cover imperfections. At Skin Clinic Blyss, our most requested service is all about helping you achieve just that—beautiful, healthy skin that doesn’t need a filter. Our Dermal Clinicians suggest a targeted homecare regimen and in-clinic treatments as part of the secret to flawless skin without makeup.

The Power of Consistency: Gym vs. Skin

Just like going to the gym, achieving great skin is all about consistency. You wouldn’t expect to get fit by working out just once, right? The same principle applies to skin. To slow down the aging process and maintain a youthful, glowing complexion, it’s essential to stick to a targeted homecare regime and regular treatments tailored to your skin’s unique needs.

Targeted Homecare Regimen

Your journey to makeup-free skin starts at home. We recommend a customised skincare routine that includes:

Cleansing: A gentle yet effective cleanser to remove dirt and impurities without stripping your skin’s natural oils.

Serums: Targeted serums packed with active ingredients to address your specific concerns.

Moisturising: A high-quality moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and balanced, reducing the appearance of fine lines and protecting the skins barrier.

SPF: Daily sunscreen application to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and prevent premature aging.

In the ever-evolving world of skincare, there’s one buzzword you should pay attention to: collagen banking. But what exactly is it, and why should you consider it as part of your skincare strategy?

What is Collagen Banking?

Collagen banking is all about investing in your skin’s long-term health by encouraging the production of collagen—the protein that keeps your skin firm, plump, and youthful. At the age of 23 age, our natural collagen production starts to decrease at the rate of approximately 1% per year, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. By “banking” collagen through various regenerative treatments, you’re essentially saving up for the future, ensuring your skin remains resilient and youthful.

Why is it Important?

Think of collagen banking like a savings account for your skin. The more you deposit now, the better equipped your skin will be to fight off the visible signs of aging later on. This proactive approach to skincare means you’re not just addressing immediate concerns but also investing in long-term skin health. It’s a strategy that pays off in the form of smoother, firmer, and more vibrant skin as the years go by.

Regenerative Treatments: Your Skin’s Best Investment

So, how do you go about collagen banking? The key lies in regenerative treatments that stimulate collagen production both immediately and over time. Treatments like microneedling, radiofrequency, and HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound, think Ultraformer MPT) are all excellent options, as well as PRP and low level lasers including Q Switched lasers. These procedures work by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, triggering the body’s natural healing process and encouraging collagen production.

But the benefits don’t stop at the short-term. By regularly undergoing these treatments, you’re continuously boosting your collagen levels, which means your skin remains firmer and more elastic in the long run. It’s the skincare equivalent of going to the gym and getting those abs made of steel – except your future is all about glowing, youthful skin.

Long-Term Results for Lifelong Benefits

With collagen banking is it’s never too early or too late to start – the treatment plan may just be a little different. Whether you’re in your 30s and starting to see the first signs of aging, or in your 50s and looking to maintain your skin’s firmness, collagen banking offers a tailored approach to achieving your skin goals.

Is Collagen Banking For Me?

Collagen banking isn’t just a trend—it’s a smart, evidence-based approach to long-term skin health. By incorporating regenerative treatments into your skincare routine, you’re making a commitment to maintaining your skin’s vitality for the long haul.

At Skin Clinic Blyss, we are experts in creating personalised treatment plans that focus on both immediate and long-term results.
Why Multitasking SPFs Just Won’t Cut It – Unveiling the Hidden Truth [UPDATED]

{UPDATED 17 OCT 2024] Unlike dedicated SPFs, multitaskers merely incorporate SPF without meeting stringent TGA guidelines essential for true sun protection efficacy. We explore what is the best sun protection for you.

In the ever-evolving realm of skincare, the importance of SPF cannot be overstated. Yet, despite widespread awareness of the dangers of sun exposure, a startling revelation surfaces: a staggering 80% of Gen Z individuals either overlook or misunderstand the necessity of daily SPF application, as revealed by a recent survey conducted by SkinProud.

At Skin Clinic Blyss, we’re all about making sure your skin gets the best care possible. That’s why when it comes to sun protection, we’re a bit particular. You might wonder why we don’t recommend products with SPF already mixed in, like your moisturiser or foundation. The answer? It’s all about effectiveness and ensuring your skin gets the full benefit of sun protection.

Sun Protection Statistics

Among Gen Z, a concerning trend emerges: 63% forego daily SPF protection altogether, while a shocking 77% mistakenly believe they’re shielded by incorporating SPF into multi-tasking products such as foundations, moisturisers, or serums. However, this reliance on multitasking SPFs poses a critical question: are they truly effective?

Amidst Australia’s sobering reality of being one of the world’s hotspots for skin cancer, with statistics from the NSW Cancer Council painting a grim picture of two out of three individuals facing skin cancer by the age of 80, and 95% of melanoma cases attributed to sun exposure, the urgency of proper SPF usage cannot be overstated.

What About Multitasking SPF Products?

Navigating through a sea of misinformation propagated by digital platforms, influencers, and ill-informed celebrities, it becomes evident that seeking guidance from trusted sources, namely dermatologists or skincare experts, is paramount.

But what’s the crux of the issue with multitasking SPF products? Unlike dedicated SPFs, multitaskers merely incorporate SPF without meeting stringent TGA guidelines essential for true sun protection efficacy. Moreover, adhering to the Cancer Council’s recommendation of applying a generous 35ml of sunscreen per application underscores the impracticality of relying on multitasking products.

Are we truly covering every exposed inch with our beloved serums or foundations?

The Problem with All-in-One SPF Products

Products that combine SPF with your daily moisturiser or foundation sound like a convenient multitasker, right? The truth is, they often fall short in providing the level of protection your skin actually needs. Here’s why:

Insufficient Coverage: To get the SPF protection advertised on the label, you’d need to apply a much larger amount of product than most people typically use. The average person doesn’t slather on a thick enough layer of foundation or moisturiser to achieve that SPF number.

Dilution of Efficacy: When SPF is mixed into a formula with other ingredients, its effectiveness can be compromised. The active ingredients that protect you from UV rays might not be as stable or effective.

Inconsistent Reapplication: Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours, especially if you’re out in the sun. Are you really going to reapply your foundation or moisturiser that often? Probably not. This leaves your skin vulnerable to sun damage.

How To Protect Yourself from the Sun

The ramifications of inadequate sun protection may not manifest immediately, particularly among Gen Z individuals who have yet to witness the full extent of sun damage. However, prioritising sun safety need not be a daunting task. By adopting simple yet effective measures:

Embrace protective clothing, including long sleeves and rash vests, especially during outdoor activities.

Apply a liberal amount of SPF 30+ or higher, reapplying every two hours or after swimming or heavy perspiration.

Opt for broad-brimmed hats to shield the face, nose, and ears from harmful UV rays.

Seek shade during peak sun hours.

Safeguard your eyes with stylish sunglasses offering UV protection.

And don’t forget to schedule annual skin checks with a dermatologist, particularly if you have a family history of skin cancer or are deemed high risk.

Why Dedicated SPF is the Way to Go

We recommend using a separate, high-quality sunscreen as the last step in your skincare routine. Here’s why it’s crucial:

Full Protection: A dedicated sunscreen is formulated to give you the maximum protection from UVA and UVB rays. It’s designed to sit on your skin and shield it effectively, without being diluted by other ingredients.

Targeted Application: You can apply sunscreen generously and evenly, ensuring that every inch of your skin is protected. This way, you can be confident that you’re getting the full SPF value, not just a fraction of it.

Optimal Reapplication: With a separate sunscreen, you’re more likely to reapply throughout the day, maintaining continuous protection. And yes, your skin will thank you for it!

Our Sun Protection Recommendations

The skincare industry has seen a surge in the popularity of LED (Light Emitting Diode) masks, promising skin rejuvenation, hair regrowth, and an overall enhanced skincare routine—all from the comfort of your home.

But are these at-home devices truly effective, and more importantly, are they safe in untrained hands? Let’s separate fact from fiction (from a dermal clinician’s perspective).

How LED Therapy Works

LED therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin at varying depths, triggering biological processes that help repair and rejuvenate the skin. Unlike UV light, which is harmful and can damage the skin, LED light is non-invasive and does not cause thermal damage.

Red Light (633nm): Known for its anti-aging benefits, red light stimulates collagen production, reduces inflammation, and promotes healing. It’s widely used for skin rejuvenation, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and improving overall skin texture.

Blue Light (410-420 nm): Primarily used to combat acne, blue light has antibacterial properties that kill acne-causing bacteria on the skin, helping to prevent breakouts. It also has biological effects on dry skin conditions including psoriasis.

Near-Infrared Light (830 nm): This deeper-penetrating light is used to support tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and promote circulation, making it effective for both skin and hair rejuvenation.

Are At-Home LED Masks Effective?

The effectiveness of at-home LED masks largely depends on the device’s specifications—such as the wavelength of light, the energy output, and how consistently it’s used. While at-home devices can offer some benefits, they often have lower power output compared to in-clinic devices, meaning results may be less dramatic and take longer to achieve.

In-clinic LED treatments typically use medical-grade devices with higher energy output, providing more effective and faster results. These treatments are administered by trained professionals who can tailor the therapy to your specific skin concerns.

Safety Concerns: Are LED Masks Safe in Untrained Hands?

Generally, LED light therapy is considered safe for most people. However, there are some important safety considerations to keep in mind, especially when using at-home devices:

Contraindications: LED therapy may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals with photosensitive conditions, those taking photosensitising medications, or individuals with certain skin conditions should avoid using LED masks without consulting a healthcare professional.

Eye Protection: LED light, especially blue light, can be harmful to the eyes. It’s crucial to use appropriate eye protection when undergoing LED therapy, even with at-home devices.

Device Quality: Not all LED masks are created equal. Some low-quality devices may not have been rigorously tested for safety and efficacy, posing risks of burns or other skin reactions. Check if it is TGA listed

Supporting Your Skincare Routine

When used correctly, LED masks can be a valuable addition to your skincare routine. Red light therapy can enhance the absorption of active ingredients in your skincare products, boost collagen production, and help maintain the results of in-clinic treatments between visits. Blue light therapy can be a helpful tool in managing acne alongside other treatments.

However, it’s important to remember that LED masks are not a replacement for professional care. They are best used as a supplement to a comprehensive skincare plan designed by a professional.

LED vs. UV: What’s the Difference?

It’s essential to clarify that LED light is not the same as UV light. UV (Ultraviolet) light, which is found in sunlight, is known to cause skin damage, including sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. LED light therapy, on the other hand, does not contain UV wavelengths and is designed to be safe and beneficial for the skin when used appropriately.

Home vs. In-Clinic LED Devices

While at-home LED devices can provide benefits, they typically do not match the power and effectiveness of in-clinic treatments. In-clinic LED therapy uses advanced, medical-grade equipment that delivers higher energy levels, resulting in more noticeable and faster improvements in skin and hair conditions. Additionally, professional treatments are tailored to your specific needs and performed under the guidance of trained clinicians, ensuring both safety and efficacy.

We chat with Sian and share her skin story.

A chef, food stylist, style icon and Scorpio. We have loved getting to know you and your skin here at Skin Clinic Blyss. What has the journey been like for you?

Style icon, why thank you, I’m blushing. Scorpio, of course I told you that! Honestly from our first interaction, the experience with Jodie and everyone at the clinic has been one of the most supportive and uplifting experiences I have had. To be greeted and looked after with such warmth, knowledge and kindness has been of great significance to me as I have been struggling with some skin issues in the last six months. I’ve looked forward to seeing Jodie every month and felt immense gratitude for her nurturing energy and such an air of relief knowing I’m in the hands of someone as knowledgeable as her.

We often say the recipe for good skin contains five essential ingredients, a cleanser, a morning serum, a night serum, moisturiser and a good SPF. What 5 kitchen ingredients can you not live without?

Olive oil

Fresh herbs

Lemons

Butter

Parmingiano Reggiano

(Salt has to be in here too but surely that goes without saying)

I feel like authenticity and genuineness are both traits that you exemplify but also look for in people. How do you find and maintain these in life?

I am someone who is very much guided by my emotions and intuition. In some periods of my life I have deterred from this and tried to be head strong but I never felt the coherence to my heart I needed. Being creative, I think the need for an emotive response in my life is paramount.

When I am in alignment with my truth everything flows and the right people, places, events and scenarios are united. I think this goes for all of us. Admitting our fears, struggles and allowing vulnerability enables us to all truly be ourselves and support each other. I think authenticity comes from succumbing to the fact that we are human and none of us really know what on earth we are doing!

I feel like one of the biggest journeys you had here with us was exploring how stress can really affect the skin. How do you try and balance stress and life with your many roles?

The last few months have been a huge learning curve for me and a fierce reminder that our mental, physical and spiritual health are undeniably intertwined. I find it quite difficult to relax and am someone who puts an immense amount of pressure on myself. Ironically this can lead to periods of being underproductive and stagnant. Stress has greatly impacted my skin with rashes and unpredictable break outs. Doesn’t matter how many beautiful, organic meals I eat or infrared saunas I melt in a week, stress wreaks havoc on the body.

Joe Dispenza and his teachings (through his books, podcasts and meditations) help me immensely. Daily rituals never go astray, a cup of bone broth, magnesium, a long walk, an oil defuser at night. Allowing myself to be curious and inspired, through music, art, nature and architecture. Above all, my greatest source of reprieve and balance comes from the people I have in my life. I honestly owe so much to the support and guidance of my friends and family.

Food influences the world around us and our relationship to it. How do you think it factors into our skin and its health?

Food has to be one of the most imperative factors to our skin. It can be nonsensical to me for people to spend a fortune on topical skincare and procedures and then not feed their skin from the inside out. The studies now showing the interrelationship between the skin and gut are undeniable. I think awareness and mindfulness around our diets is crucial for many reasons, our environment, our bodies, our community.

Eating as much organic, seasonal and unprocessed food as possible is something I am lucky enough to have had instilled in my from the day I was born. When we cook things ourselves we eliminate many additives, oils and unnecessary ingredients in our food. I also believe that food can bring immense joy and satisfaction to our lives so I am not one to shy away from some hedonistic joys, a perfect martini, a bowl of pasta and a cone of pistacchio gelato to name a few.

Do you have a favourite skincare product that Skin Clinic Blyss has given you?

The Universkin cleansing oil is so nourishing and uplifting. I use it every night with a Gua Sha for a moment of self indulgence.

We were lucky enough to have you in for Laser Genesis, BBL and peels with Jodie and a HydraFacial and LED with Jack. What’s been your favourite treatment so far?

The regular LED treatments have been an absolute favourite, not only healing my skin but giving me thirty minutes to relax. BBL would have to be the treatment I noticed the most significant results from, what a game changer!

What’s the biggest takeaway lesson you have from your skin journey here at Skin Clinic Blyss?

Patience. Always the virtue I struggle with the most! We all want to apply a new product to our faces and wake up the next morning miraculously made over but good things take time. Jodie and the team at the clinic have reminded me that I’m investing in my skin for many years to come, not just for tomorrow which in turn has reduced a lot of stress I had about my skin concerns and lead to great results.

A good recipe often requires a quick taste test to see how the flavours are going and if anything needs tweaking. We approach skin treating skin in a similar manner always having a pivot point when something isn’t working the way we anticipated it would. How important was it to you that we were able to tweak around your skin’s treatment plan in response to your changing skin?

Knowing that there was always a solution gave me so much faith and peace of mind, given that my skin has been fickle of late. The reassurance that there would be an end to the unpredictability helped me to relax about it all. The psychological benefit of being in the hands of people you trust when it comes to your health is incredibly important.

You are often on the go to many different locations; how do you adapt your skincare to your constantly changing environments?

This probably sounds obvious but I think keeping things simple is key. I try to drink plenty of water and get to bed early as those factors greatly impact my skin. I then stick to the basics, double cleanse, serum, moisturiser and the odd sheet mask. Sun screen every day is always a non negotiable.

What is important to you when having your skin professionally treated that you found at Skin Clinic Blyss?

When it comes to something as personal and identifying as our face, you obviously want to feel as though you’re in safe hands. I find the beauty and skin care world very overwhelming at times, with so many differing opinions and products on offer. Having professional support that was knowledgeable, down to earth and simplified was important to me and something that was given immediately at the clinic. It’s honestly been such a pleasure to meet you all and be in your wonderful hands.
