Keeping Skin Hydrated When You Fly

As any seasoned traveller knows, flying can wreak havoc on your complexion, often resulting in dehydrated, puffy and irritated skin. If you’re about to enjoy some air travel, we’re sharing how you can take care of your skin at 35,000 feet to ensure you touch down holiday ready.

It’s important to prepare your skin BEFORE you fly. Start by double cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser like Aspect Cleansing Micellar Water, then apply your favourite facial serum (preferably with hyaluronic acid). On top of that goes a heavier style moisturiser (and don’t forget your eye cream!), which will help prevent water evaporation during the flight. It’s also a great idea to repeat this process before you land.

We realise this may sound extreme, but trust us, it’s vital to get on the plane without makeup (or take it off as soon as your board) and layer on a nice heavy moisturiser (or facial oil) and you can top up during the flight with Cosmedix Mystic Hydrating Treatment. The air inside the cabin of the plane is super dry and puts your skin under stress, removing your makeup will keep it calm and hydrated until you arrive.

Aeroplane windows don’t filter out skin-damaging UV rays and you’re closer to the sun than if you were on the ground, so SPF is a must! We love Société Prime and Defend SPF 30 which does double duty as a primer too.

The day before you fly, start hydrating from the inside out. Up your intake of super hydrators like high mineral spring water, aloe, cucumber, coconut water, anti-inflammatory turmeric tonics and plain old water will also do the trick! Make sure you’re continually topping up during the flight too.

Sleep is super important in maintaining a great complexion, so pack yourself a good quality sleep mask (something soft that won’t irritate your skin) and decent earplugs. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing!

As soon are you get to your hotel, immediately (double) cleanse to remove all the built-up impurities from your skin and use a hydrating mask to recover moisture while you unpack. Our favourite post-flight hydrating masks are Societe Rejuvenating Peptide Gel Masks and you can even pop one of these on during your flight for maximum hydration on landing!
