Dermal Fillers FAQs

Dermal fillers are one of the most popular treatments we do in our clinic. Our cosmetic doctor (Dr Bao) and registered nurse (Elise) both administer filler to the highest standard, with a focus on achieving the most natural results for you. Read below a list of frequently asked questions on dermal fillers.

What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are substance/gels injected beneath the skin’s surface to smooth wrinkles and add volume and contour. The products are composed of stabilised hyaluronic acid (HA) which occurs naturally in the cells of the skin. It works by drawing in water and therefore augmenting the skin, thus reducing wrinkles. Filler is not permanent and depending on what type you use, results can last from between one to two years.

What areas can dermal fillers be used for?
Our face loses volume and contour as we age, the bones and the soft tissue dissolve increasing the appearance of sagging. Dermal fillers can be used to replace this loss of volume and restore the structural support, giving a more youthful appearance. The aim of filler is to rejuvenate your face. For example, lips can be injected to improve their shape, size, symmetry and proportion. Cheeks can be injected to improve definition. An underdeveloped chin can be injected to make it appear more projected and proportionate. Noses can be injected to improve its shape and contour.

What does the procedure entail and is it painful?
The procedure is generally not painful if you choose a skilled injector.
Most of the time, basic dermal filler procedures don’t require anaesthetic as the filler already contains local anaesthetic. It is a straight-forward procedure involving a few tiny injections directly into your skin, taking between 15-30 minutes. Make-up can be applied immediately after your procedure and you can go straight back to work.

When will I see results and how long does it last?
Results can be seen immediately after your treatment and will gradually improve over the following 2–4 weeks. Results can last between 9-18 months although optimal results can be maintained over a long period of time through regular repeated treatments. The longevity of the treatment varies from person to person depending on your individual requirements and the particular dermal filler being administered.

Are dermal fillers safe?
Yes! We only used products with a proven safety record. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a substance which occurs naturally in the cells of the skin, so there is no risk of allergic reaction. Even people with food sensitivities can receive these fillers safely. We use brands that have been used as an injectable cosmetic treatment for more than two decades with an excellent safety record.

Are there any side effects?
Today’s dermal fillers have come a long way since the first-generation of collagen injections. Advanced injection techniques, coupled with the use of micro-cannula (blunt needles) and improved product safety means that significant side effects are extremely uncommon but may include:

Injection-related reactions: these reactions may include redness at the injection site immediately after the treatment.

Bruising: occasionally bruising can occur. However the use of micro-cannula (blunt needles) dramatically reduces the risk of bruising.
Contour irregularities can and do occasionally occur. Massaging can usually smooth out any ‘lumpiness’ however if persistent the filler can be easily and rapidly dissolved.

Infection: as with all injections, this procedure carries a small risk of infection. The syringe is sterile and standard precautions associated with injectable materials are always taken.

Necrosis: this is one of the worst possible complications of dermal filler, but fortunately it’s extremely rare. It can happen when dermal filler is accidentally injected into a blood vessel and it subsequently blocks the blood supply to the skin/tissue in that area.

Blindness: This is a VERY RARE complication. There have been approximately 100 cases in the world in which dermal filler has been injected into the blood vessel which has a connection with the artery that supplies blood and oxygen to the eye. A good reason to choose a reputable clinic.

What happens after my treatment?
After your treatment, we will talk you through any aftercare advice in order to maximise your treatments benefits and avoid any undesirable side effects. You can resume normal activities, drive yourself home or return to work immediately after your treatment. As with any type of injection, there may be some slight redness immediately afterwards, you may camouflage this by applying make-up. For 2 weeks after your treatment, it’s advised that you avoid extreme heat (sunbed or sunbaking) or intense cold.

How much does it cost?
Cost depends on the type of dermal filler you require, the amount needed and the areas of the face you wish to treat. During your consultation, Dr Bao or Nurse Elise will tailor a treatment plan specifically for you and advise the exact cost of your treatment.
