How to hydrate your skin for a healthy, radiant complexion

Maintaining hydrated skin is essential for a healthy, radiant complexion. However, with various environmental stressors and lifestyle factors, achieving optimal hydration levels can be challenging. As well as this, dry skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea and dermatitis add another element to skin health.

 

Check your cleanser

First step, check your cleanser. If your skin feels tight or ‘squeaky’, you have impaired your barrier. A good cleanser will ensure that your skin is feeling clean, but not tight. The skin should feel soft as well as hydrated. Use a mild, hydrating cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils.

Avoid hot water, as it can dehydrate the skin, and opt for lukewarm water instead.

 

Lifestyle

Remember that your skin is an organ, and it is the largest organ of the body. What you do to your body will show on your skin. Too many late nights, processed foods, not enough hydration and not enough alcohol free nights will dehydrate, age and dull the skin. Ensure that you are getting enough sleep, with a balanced diet and keep your bodies cells hydrated. For those that suffer dry skin conditions, ensure that you are eating enough omega-3 products.

 

Exfoliation

Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, allowing better absorption of hydrating products. Choose gentle exfoliants suitable for your skin type, such as chemical exfoliants containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). And don’t over exfoliate – if you’re using the correct homecare for your skin, once per week should be enough.

 

Hydrating Serums

Incorporate hydrating serums into your skincare routine, such as those containing hyaluronic acid – this magic ingredient holds up to 1000 times its weight in water,  glycerin, or vitamin B5. Apply serums onto damp skin to lock in moisture and maximize their hydrating benefits, finishing with an appropriate moisturiser.

 

Moisturisers

Choose a moisturiser suitable for your skin type and concerns, whether it’s a lightweight lotion, cream, or gel. Look for moisturisers with humectant ingredients like hyaluronic acid and emollients like shea butter to maintain skin hydration throughout the day. Other ingredients to look out for are squalene, ceramides and hyaluronic acid.

 

Overnight Treatments

Overnight masks or hydrating treatments can help replenish moisture in your skin while you sleep. Ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide, and peptides can help repair the skin’s barrier and retain moisture.

 

Sun Protection

Rule 101 of any skincare routine. Protect your skin from sun damage by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily. Sunscreen helps prevent moisture loss and maintains skin hydration levels, especially when exposed to UV rays.
